About The School

School Information

The Mission statement of Wares Ferry Elementary School is stated as; The mission of Wares Ferry Road Elementary School is to provide quality instruction in a safe and nurturing environment which promotes students’ uniqueness and well-being.” This Mission statement was developed in a collaborative team effort in the summer of 2011 – team members included professional and non-professional staff and two parents. The finished statement was presented to the PTA and agreed upon by the constituents. The Mission statement is revisited at the beginning of each school year and revised if needed.

The school is located in a well-kept, low income, residential area, 96% of the students walk to school while the remainder are bussed. The school services a community which is racially mixed with 91% of the students being Black. The school is a Title I school with 96% of the students eligible for a free or reduced lunch.

The staff consists of 21 classroom teachers, 2 special education teachers, 1 counselor, 1 nurse, 1 librarian, 1 reading coach, 1 technology teacher, 2 PE teachers, and 1 administrator. There are also 6 support staff – 3 secretarial and 3 custodial. The racial breakdown of the staff closely aligns with the demographics of the students – 90% Black staff members and 10% other.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE:

The school’s vision for the students is one that emphasizes individual instruction, differentiated instruction, teamwork, and mutual respect for all the stakeholders. The main goal for the school is one of equity – all students are entitled to a quality education through quality instruction.

Students are assessed in a variety of ways throughout the year to include the state mandated ARMT, ongoing reading and math assessments through Renaissance Place, continuous assessment in the Pearson reading program and Kid’s College – a program obtained via a grant which enables students to continuously learn via computer generated activities which measures success.

Staff members meet bi-weekly in grade level teams with the Reading Coach and Administrator to discuss assessment results and to determine how to modify individual student success. Records are kept of all meetings and used as a means of comparison.

Support programs include a Positive Behavior School program, Character Education Program, and a Student Ambassador Program. Peer mentoring is also available as upper grade students work with those in the lower grades to assist with academic and personal concerns.

A new PTA was installed this past year as the previous PTA was abandoned; this is definitely a work in progress. There is a strong and active Title I Parent involvement Committee which meets quarterly with the Principal to discuss issues and concerns.
